Essential facts

CLIMATE
The Philippines enjoys a tropical climate that is often hot and humid. The month of August falls under the lean season, and slightly cooler than the rest of the year with occasional rains. However, weather in the Philippines is usually unpredictable. Hence, it is advisable to bring an umbrella when traveling around Manila. Bringing a pair of sturdy, water-resistant shoes is also a must. Loose, comfortable, light clothing is recommended, but bring a light jacket, cardigan, or shawl, especially when visiting indoor establishments with air-conditioning.

FLYING IN AND OUT

Manila's major airport is the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA; airport code MNL), which has four (4) terminals. Please ensure that you know where your flight is landing/departing, as the terminals are located far from each other and there are no direct cross-terminal connections.

  • Terminal 1 serves most international flights including Philippine Airlines.

  • Terminal 2 as of March 2023 exclusively serves domestic flights of Cebu Pacific, PAL Express, and AirAsia.

  • Terminal 3 serves other international flights such as All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, Delta, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Jeju Air, Jetstar, KLM Royal Dutch, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Scoot, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, United. T3 no longer serves domestic flights as of March 2023.

  • Terminal 4 serves domestic flights for AirSWIFT, CebGo, AirAsia, and Skyjet.

GOING AROUND

When going around Manila, it is recommended to either use a taxi or a ride-hailing service (e.g. Grab). Uber is no longer operational in the Philippines. When going to the conference venue or hotel from the airport by taxi, it is recommended to take the white coupon airport taxi. Look for the airport taxi queue outside the airport door. Should you prefer to use a metered taxi, ensure that the meter is running once you get in. Taxis in the Philippines usually do not have designated queues except in malls; simply hail them when you see one.

ELECTRICITY

Plug sockets in the Philippines are predominantly Type A but some locations especially hotels have Type B and to some extent Type C. Standard voltage is 220 V and frequency is 60 Hz.
